Gambling

Matthew Cole set up the gambling hall when he first got to town in 1869. However, by 1879, profits were dwindling, thanks to the more congenial atmosphere of the saloons, particularly the White Owl. This was when Matthew was finally ready to listen to Rachel and closed it in the interest of temperance and town purity¹.
