Post Office
The Post Office was housed in a tiny corner of Cole’s General Mercantile. Herbert Jenkins Smith, when he was not drunk at the White Owl, ran the post office. At other times, his wife took over and ensured delivery. Herbert Jenkins Smith ran the post office from 1869 until his death in 1881, and Susannah ran it alone until her death a year later. After that, the Coles took care of it until 1930, but did not deliver mail, as Rachel Cole said it was her duty to see the face of everyone who recieved their mail.
