Lucy Rainer
What we know
1858 - 1927
Wife of Ben Rainer, freighter for the CR&R Railroad. Four stillbirths (son, son, son, and daughter.)
Waiting
Lucy Rainer darns
the mud into his socks1
in the near dark
of onrushing winter.
Wind whines down
through the cracks
in the roof, darkens the fire,
sputters near the sod hearth.
Footsteps loom loud.
The door swings.
The ache in her
shoulders begins again.
She outlived him.
